On paper, they had no chance. On the field, they had something more.
You know the feeling. You have watched a team of unknowns line up against a powerhouse and felt, deep in your gut, that the outcome was already decided. You have seen the odds stacked so impossibly high that even hoping felt foolish. And yet something inside you whispered, What if?
Who Were These Guys? is the true story of the Sauget Wizards, a semipro baseball team from a tiny Illinois village, made up of former college and professional players who could not shake their love for the game. On June 20, 1989, in the sweltering heat of Millington, Tennessee, they accepted an invitation that stunned the baseball world: a game against the United States National Team, a roster loaded with elite college stars on the verge of Major League careers. Position by position, the Wizards were outmatched on every stat sheet. They were older. They were supposed to be outclassed. They were the longest of long shots. But baseball is not played on paper. Told by Bob Wilber, a Wizard himself, this inspiring memoir delivers more than a sports story. It captures the brotherhood, belief, and relentless determination of a group of men who proved that the whole truly can be greater than the sum of its parts. With a foreword by Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven, this is a story you will not forget.
- A gripping, first-person account of one of the greatest underdog moments in amateur baseball history
- A celebration of teamwork, heart, and the bonds that make great teams unforgettable
- Perfect for fans of inspirational true sports narratives and the timeless magic of baseball
