As a young lad residing in Brooklyn (with a short sojurn to Massachusetts), I watched Dick Sisler's dramatic three run tenth inning homer sail into the bleachers, and give the Philadelphia Phillies a stirring 4-1 victory, and a trip to their second World Series.
The Brooklyn Dodgers were the Lords of Flatbush in those years and the upstart Whiz Kids, as the Phillies were so aptly named, dethroned the Kings that afternoon.
It changed my life towards baseball and I have been a Phillies fan since that time. I have witnessed many ups and downs (mostly downs), since following the Red & White. I never traveled to Philadelphia to watch a game but, when the Phils came to New York, I saw them play at Ebbetts Field, the Polo Grounds, and Shea Stadium then the home of the N.Y. Mets.
The Phillies started play in 1876, but the actual franchise history took shape in 1883. It is one of the earliest baseball entities and has remained the Philadelphia Phillies right up to the present time.
This book Whiz Kids To Today, a Baseball Card history of the Fightin Phils, looks back at those winning teams (57 of them), since 1885. It traces all of the player rosters and many individual statistics, but, its uniqueness comes in the form of baseball cards.
It is a very colorful panorama of its players from 1950 to the present, and affords the young and old the chance to look back at its stars, and especially for the youthful fans of today, to acquaint them with Phillies lore past and present.
Being a sports historian (since retired), I have developed a keen appreciation towards sports history and the deeds of its many participants. I sincerely hope that all Phillies fans find this book as entertaining, and informative, as I did in its preparation.
