Whispering Banyan follows Madhavan, who returns reluctantly to his ancestral home, Devatharam, in rural Kerala after twenty years of estrangement, compelled only by the death of his domineering father, Govindan Nair. The house he left behind-shadowed by an ancient banyan tree and a sealed stone well-feels disturbed. Villagers whisper about lights and figures near the courtyard at night, and Madhavan's caretaker claims Devatharam has been awake since Govindan's final days.
Sorting through Govindan's belongings, Madhavan discovers a locked steel box tucked away in a false compartment. Inside are objects that should never have been kept: the ritual attire of Devi, a Theyyam performer from the village, and her personal diary.
As he reads deeper, Madhavan begins to sense an unseen presence in the house. Soft footsteps echo near the well; shadows gather beneath the banyan's hanging roots; and villagers report sightings of both a woman in red and a thin barefoot girl.
Madhavan pieces together the truth: The shame and violence of that act became woven into the house itself. Devatharam, long a symbol of power, became a vessel of concealed guilt.
As the haunting intensifies, Madhavan realizes that the spectral manifestations are not driven by vengeance but by the demand to be remembered. In the novel's emotional crescendo, it is Neelakshi, not Devi, who delivers the final revelation. . Through her quiet confession, the house finally releases its accumulated sorrow.
