The wind shifted in the night. By morning the fjord was colder than it had been the day before, and the sky over the sea was the color of slate. Cloudy felt the season turning. He had felt this turn twice before. He thought he knew what it meant.
He did not know about the flock.
A line of greylag geese came in from the north, low over the water, calling to each other in the way geese call. They were on their way south. They had been on their way south for weeks, in pieces, family by family, and this was one of those pieces. Cloudy watched them pass.
A squall came up off the open sea without warning. It hit the flock from the side. The flock split. When the wind dropped, most of them had reformed into a long V again and were already moving on. One had not. A young goose, on her first migration, was on the water of the fjord, breathing hard, alone.
Cloudy went down to her.
This is a book about a cloud who finds a young goose, and shelters her one night, and brings her to where her flock is waiting before the long crossing of the sea. It is also a book about what happens after that.
