Cesar Soares grew up poor in a small Brazilian town of 10,000 people - one of eight children. When his father fell financially, the boy took to the streets, shining shoes and selling popsicles to help at home. At school, an aggressive skin disease - psoriasis - made him the target of cruel bullying. He failed four grades.

But he had a dream: to become a television presenter.

Through grit and an unbreakable will, he achieved more than that - he built his own communication company and became an independent TV producer and presenter on one of Brazil's largest television networks, buying his own airtime.

Then came a violent fall.

He landed in the United States with just enough for the plane ticket and one month's rent - nothing more. He did backbreaking work and crossed the country - Boston, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Jersey, New York City - more than twenty cities across six states. And then, near Times Square, another fall - this one shattered his spine. Two surgeries. A cane. A psychiatrist who told him to write.

This memoir was written lying down. It is the story of a boy who refused to stay down.
