Does your child ever struggle to answer the simplest question - where are you from?
For millions of children growing up across borders, between cultures, and inside homes where more than one language is spoken, that four-word question can feel impossible to answer.
Where are you from, Sofia? is the story of Sofia - a ten-year-old born in Spain, with an American dad, a Polish mum, and a grandmother in Kraków who calls her Zosia every Sunday. She speaks Spanish at school, English at home, and is still learning the rest. When her class is asked to present where they come from, Sofia doesn't know where to begin. Every other child seems to have one simple answer. She has three countries, three languages, and three very different grandmothers' recipes.
This is the story of how she figures out that this isn't a problem. It's a superpower.
Written for children aged 7 to 10, Where are you from, Sofia? is a warm, funny, and genuinely moving story about identity, belonging, and what it really means to call a place home. It was created specifically for children who live between cultures - expat kids, third culture kids, children of mixed-nationality parents - and for every child who has ever felt a little bit like they didn't completely fit in one place.
Because sometimes, the children who belong to everywhere are the ones who can see the most.
A note for parents
We know the questions don't only come from teachers. They come at birthday parties, in school lunch queues, and at the dinner table on ordinary Tuesday evenings. This book was written to help your child find their own answer - and to feel proud of it.
Every family's story is different. If you'd like a custom version of this story written for your specific combination of countries, cultures, and languages, we'd love to make one. Send us a note at info@jozev.nl - tell us where you're from, where you live, and how old your children are. We'll do the rest.
