When Silence Becomes Dangerous begins with a disturbing personal experience in Mt Hagen, Papua New Guinea, where the author was confronted by four men carrying knives while people nearby watched. Rather than turning that experience into an accusation against one community or country, Okoli Cosmas Odinaka uses it to explore a much wider question: what happens when fear becomes stronger than our responsibility to one another?
Drawing together Christian ethics, the Good Samaritan, the psychology of the bystander effect, public responsibility, policing, community leadership, and the duties of churches, this book examines how violence grows when peaceful people become isolated and how communities can respond without falling into vigilantism or revenge.
The book challenges Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, Pentecostals, evangelicals, other Christian communities, citizens, families, young people, police, and political leaders to recognise that public peace is a shared responsibility.
Papua New Guinea is the starting point, but the message reaches far beyond it. Whether the problem is street robbery, knife crime, gang intimidation, extortion, communal violence, political thuggery, or another form of public fear, the underlying question remains the same:
What safe, lawful, and responsible action can we take when another person is in danger?
Practical, reflective, and firmly opposed to mob justice, When Silence Becomes Dangerous argues that courage does not always mean fighting. Sometimes it means calling for help, telling the truth, supporting a victim, refusing to hide an offender, forming young people differently, preaching before the funeral, and demanding that public institutions fulfil their responsibilities.
At its heart is one conviction:
Violence grows when fear isolates good people, and peace grows when responsibility is organised.
