What this book does
Working through the physics of time, the neuroscience of consciousness and the philosophy of personal identity, What Would Have to Survive takes seriously every account that promises continuation: the soul, the receiver, the self that returns, the consciousness that persists when the brain stops. One by one, the evidence makes each harder to hold. Brains generate minds. Memories depend on tissue. The self is a maintained pattern, and patterns do not survive the breakdown of what maintains them.
What this book does not do
It does not offer false comfort. It does not use quantum mechanics as a metaphor for hope. It does not pretend that uncertainty is permission for whatever metaphysics we prefer.
What remains
A life does not need to be permanent in order to be real. Love does not require an afterlife to have been love. And the finality of death makes the life it ends more urgent, not less.
This life does not need to survive death in order to have mattered. It mattered.
