What Was Jesus Talking About? begins with a question many Christians have heard but not always explored: what did Jesus mean when he spoke of the Kingdom of God?
Alan Bennett approaches that question not as a technical biblical scholar, and not as a writer of doctrine, but as a reflective Christian thinker concerned with evidence, language, judgment and belief. The book asks why a phrase so prominent in the Gospel accounts has often remained strangely undefined in ordinary Christian understanding. If Jesus announced the Kingdom of God, embodied it in mercy, spoke of it in parables, and invited people to enter it, what was he pointing toward?

From there, the book asks why Christianity is now difficult for many people to hear. Some have drifted away from church. Others associate Christianity with institutional failure, moralism, coercion, hypocrisy or language that no longer seems alive. Bennett does not dismiss these difficulties. He treats them as real obstacles that must be faced if Christianity is to be reconsidered honestly.
The central movement of the book is a return to Jesus himself. The Kingdom of God is not treated as a territory, a political system, church authority, private spirituality or simply heaven after death. It is explored as the reign of God: the active nearness of God's mercy, justice, truth, forgiveness and love. Jesus did not offer a neat definition of the Kingdom. He announced it, enacted it, described it through seed and yeast, treasure and pearl, lost sheep and returning sons, meals and mercy, reversal and judgment. He healed, forgave, welcomed the excluded, challenged the proud, blessed the poor and taught his followers to pray, Your kingdom come.
The book then traces how the proclamation of Jesus became memory, witness, community and tradition. It considers Paul, the cross and resurrection, and the growth of Christian tradition, while recognising that tradition is both necessary and vulnerable. It can preserve the memory of Jesus, but it can also become distorted when it forgets the reality to which it points.
The final movement asks how the reign of God may be lived in ordinary life. The Kingdom is not reduced to moral conduct, social reform, inward spirituality, church membership or future hope, though it touches all of them. It becomes visible, however imperfectly, wherever mercy becomes practical, forgiveness is attempted, power serves rather than dominates, the wounded are not abandoned, truth is spoken, the excluded are welcomed, and hope is kept alive.
