Mara Berg's choices might not have always made sense to the rest of the world, but she believes they've served her well. They've led her to a career she's found fulfilling and worthwhile-and into the arms of the love of her life, Jack Holden.
Jack is Mara's colleague, and over the span of their almost thirty-year relationship, she has been content to let him divide his time between her and his wife and children. Now, though, as Mara retires from teaching, she finds herself anxious for more of Jack's attention. His kids are grown, and Mara believes she and Jack should finally be together, properly.
As Mara looks back on her life-her childhood with her nice Jewish family in Brooklyn, college in the sixties, her first job and lover-she marvels at how she's ended up where she is now, and wonders if it's time to reassess her choices and create a better future.
The story of an intelligent, passionate, and sensitive woman and her quest to make peace with her life's choices and the people involved in them, What the Heart Murmurs is a sophisticated look at modern understandings of love, marriage, and career.
