What the Ground Keeps

What the Ground Keeps is a Smoky Mountain literary mystery about the quiet things a town remembers, the secrets it buries, and the woman who learns to listen to both.

Eight months after Julia Brandt uproots her life and buys a dog bakery in Waynesville, NC, she's finally finding her footing - morning walks with her basset hound, Walter; neighbors who know her name; a rhythm that feels like belonging. But when Walter uncovers something buried beneath an old garden shed during a community workday, Julia is pulled into a mystery the mountains have been keeping for more than a decade.

As the investigation unfolds, Julia finds herself navigating the delicate ecosystem of a small Appalachian town: the botanist who knows every plant and every silence; the preservationist whose warmth never wavers; the deputy whose steady presence feels like a promise; and the neighbors whose memories don't always match the stories they tell. What begins as a simple discovery becomes a slow unearthing of grief, loyalty, and the long shadows cast by unfinished histories.

Set against blooming dogwoods, cold-green mornings, and the steadfast blue of the Smokies, What the Ground Keeps blends cozy mystery elements with the emotional depth of Southern literary fiction. It's a story about community, the weight of what we carry, and the quiet ways a place can change you - or reveal you - if you let it.
