What is Tourada à Corda? is a beautifully illustrated rhyming children's picture book that introduces young readers to one of the most beloved traditions of Terceira Island in the Azores.
Through colorful storytelling and Portuguese vocabulary woven into English text, children are invited into the heart of Azorean culture. From green pastures and rock walls to lively village festas filled with music, family, and celebration, this story explores the traditions, people, and island spirit behind Tourada à Corda. Readers will learn about touros, ganadarias, ganadeiros, pastores, capinhas, festa brava, and the meaning of orgulho while discovering how traditions are passed lovingly from grandparents to grandchildren across generations.
Written in a warm read-aloud style with gentle rhymes, the book celebrates family, courage, heritage, and cultural identity. It also highlights how Azorean communities continue these traditions today not only in Terceira, but also in São Jorge, Graciosa, Faial, California, and Canada. Filled with watercolor-mixed-media-inspired illustrations of hydrangeas, ocean cliffs, cobblestone roads, festas, and island life, What is Tourada à Corda? captures the beauty and heart of the Azores for children and families everywhere.
Perfect for ages 5-12, heritage learning, classrooms, bilingual families, and anyone wishing to preserve and celebrate Azorean culture. Written and illustrated by Marisa Silva Rocha, author of non-fiction titles; Avó Silva's Dairy House and What is Fado?
