What is Called Artificial Intelligence? restores that footing.
Beginning with definition, the book distinguishes computation from learning systems, intelligence from thinking, and output from judgment. It shows that modern AI did not arrive as a sudden breakthrough, but accumulated over time through the interaction of computing power and programming power, until learned systems became practical at scale.
From there, it examines how AI enters society - not as a single tool, but as a class of tools operating through two primary modes: convenience and productivity. These modes reshape behavior, work, and institutional expectations in distinct ways, often without being clearly recognized.
The final section addresses the growing concern surrounding artificial intelligence. It separates real risks - human misuse, over-delegation, and the displacement of judgment - from misplaced fears that attribute thought, intention, or inwardness to machines.
This is not a speculative or futuristic account. It is a structured explanation of what AI is, how it developed, and what it does today.
