At the beginning of the 1990's a few intellectually challenging programs made their ways to the airwaves. These prompted a cultural shift toward the notion that cartoons could, and should, be taken seriously. The journey in this book takes the reader back to this era. We will see the history of how seemingly innocuous entertainment, aimed at kids, could have encouraged the reading of classic literature, the study of cinema, and a consideration of many social issues. These programs asked children to assess the concepts contained within them. Rather than simply enjoy these shows for their entertainment value, many children of that decade learned about worlds beyond their immediate environment. Education can take many forms. Let us examine the ways these out-of-the-classroom lessons opened up new vistas for the kids of the 90's.
