Western Australia: A History From Its Discovery to the Inauguration of the Commonwealth is an authoritative and comprehensive survey of the development of the western third of the Australian continent. Written by J.S. Battle, this scholarly work traces the region's trajectory from the earliest maritime explorations by European navigators to the pivotal moment of Australian federation in 1901.
The narrative delves into the challenges of early settlement, the establishment of the Swan River Colony, and the socio-political evolution of a remote frontier into a self-governing entity. Detailed chapters explore the expansion of the pastoral industry, the impact of significant gold discoveries, and the complex administrative milestones that shaped the state's unique identity. Battle provides a meticulous account of the legislative and social foundations that defined the region before it joined the Commonwealth.
This work serves as an essential resource for those interested in colonial history, Australian statecraft, and the foundational events of the Antipodes. By examining the triumphs and hardships of the pioneering era, the book offers a deep understanding of the historical forces that forged the modern state of Western Australia, making it a vital piece of historical literature for students and enthusiasts alike.
