Across the forests of the north, from the Norse berserker to the Russian oborot and the wolf-charmers of the German lands, the belief in men who become wolves ran deep - and here it is followed with rare learning.
Taken from Montague Summers' The Werewolf (1933), this volume gathers the werewolf traditions of the northern and eastern countries, tracing lycanthropy through saga, chronicle, court record, and peasant superstition. Augustus Montague Summers (1880 - 1948) was an English author and clergyman celebrated for his earnest studies of witches, werewolves, and vampires, all of which he held to be quite real; in 1928 he produced the first English translation of the notorious witch-hunters' manual, the Malleus Maleficarum.
This edition features:
- Werewolf belief across Scandinavia, the Baltic, Russia, and the German lands, drawn from saga, law, and court record.
- The berserker and the wolf-warrior, shape-changing by girdle or salve, and the notorious northern lycanthropy trials.
- Summers' comparative reach across Pagan survival, Christian demonology, and the enduring dread of the forest.
