Excerpt: ...Mr. Robarts, two of the nine directors who demanded it, --the court adjourned. the court, a letter received by the deputy chairman and hirnfelf, igned William Lulhington, and George ohnltone, intimating their intention to bring forward the following motion as on that day. lt appearing-to this court, that the provifions made in the Aet of the 33d of George Ill. c. 61, and the regulations in confequence thereof, have not been adegpate to the declared object of bringing e commerce of Britifh India to the port of London; and that the prcfent ftate of the general trade between the Eait indies and Europe, requires very ferious and immediate inveftigation, in order to give Britiih merchants thofe facilities which the legiflature evidently intended, by the principle laid down in that a&, which principle then was, and now moft manifeltly is, for the real intcreft of the Eaft India company, as well as the Britifh nation at large. Refolved, that this court do recommend to the court of directors to take the fuhjeet into their immediate confidcration: alfo to rcprefent the fame to his Majefiy s commiflioners for the affairs of ludia, and folicit their advice a.nd allillancc towards the eflabliihment of fuch an arrangement in the general commercial intercourfe between Great Britain and the Ealt lndien, as may carry into full effc& that wife, 'ul1, and liberal principle: due regard heing had at the fame tune to the exiiling rights and privileges of this company.
