The Weight of Fine Things is a standalone literary novel told in retrospective first person by Clyde Causey, an antiques dealer in Natchez, Mississippi, looking back across a life from 1965 to the present day.

The novel is structured as a spoken account. Clyde is telling this, not writing it, and the voice carries the particular formality of a man who learned to speak carefully because speaking carelessly once cost him something. Interleaved through the book are verbatim entries from a journal kept by the woman who left him the house, a second voice that sees the same events from an angle Clyde does not have access to for most of his life.

At its center is a question the book takes seriously and refuses to answer cheaply: what does it mean to be recognized by someone, and what happens to a person who is recognized too late, or who cannot recognize himself in time to act on it.

It is a novel about class as much as about love. Clyde spends his life buying his way toward rooms he was not born into, and the book is unsentimental about what that purchase does and does not buy.
