He felt very hungry, and was longing for his breakfast. He also *flr saw the smoke of Tom's fire rising up into the air, and wished that he was with him in the cave. He went nearer and nearer, and he could hear the crackling of the sticks and the hissing of the kettle, and he wondered how Tom would manage about the tea. Perhaps he would drink hot water and sugar. The milk had been unfit to use for the last two days. Then he saw Tom cutting slices off the bacon and toasting them, and laying them when done on to pieces of toasted bread which he had made before; and Alfred felt more and more hungry as he saw and smelt all this. He ventured to the entrance of the boat-house, and stood watching, but Tom took no notice of him. After some minutes Tom began to eat his bacon and toast, and Alfred could not bear it any longer, so he said-- Tom! But Tom went on eating, and still took no notice. Tom, said Alfred again, I wish you would let me live with you again; Charlie is so unkind. Yes, I see, said Tom, with his mouth full. Charlie has not such good provisions as I have, and you have not any lucifers, and can't light your fire, and you don't fancy raw potatoes for breakfast --I see.
