This is the first major Messianic Jewish commentary on the Didache-an early discipleship manual used to instruct Gentile believers under the guidance of the Jewish apostles. The text dates to the first century and may even predate some of Paul's letters.
Known also as The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, the Didache offers a rare glimpse into first-century faith-when the followers of Yeshua still lived as a sect of Judaism. It presents clear ethical instruction, halachic guidance, and community priorities for Gentiles coming into the covenant.
This edition includes a new, complete translation and a detailed, verse-by-verse Messianic Jewish commentary. Drawing from apostolic writings and Jewish tradition, the commentary restores the early Jewish voice of the faith and reveals how non-Jews were taught to walk in the commandments of God alongside Israel.
Rediscovered in 1880 by Archbishop Philotheos Bryennios in a monastery in Istanbul, the Didache had circulated widely in the early church and was even considered for inclusion in the New Testament. After vanishing in the fifth century, its reappearance 1,400 years later stunned scholars.
The Didache picks up where the Apostolic Decree leaves off-expanding instruction to Gentile believers on how to live faithfully within the framework of Messianic Judaism. It includes teachings of Yeshua not found in the canonical Gospels and reflects the lived theology of His earliest Jewish disciples.
