The Way of All Flesh is a novel written by Samuel Butler and first published in 1903. The story follows the life of Ernest Pontifex, a young man who is born into a wealthy and respectable family in Victorian England. However, as he grows up, Ernest becomes disillusioned with the hypocrisy and moral corruption of his family and society as a whole.Ernest rebels against his family's expectations and pursues a career as a writer, but he continues to struggle with his own moral and ethical beliefs. Along the way, he falls in love, marries, and has children, but his relationships are complicated by his own inner turmoil and the expectations of those around him.The novel explores themes of family, morality, religion, and the struggle for personal identity in a society that values conformity above all else. Through Ernest's journey, the reader is forced to confront the contradictions and complexities of Victorian society, as well as the timeless struggle to find meaning and purpose in one's life. The Way of All Flesh is widely regarded as a classic of English literature and a groundbreaking work of realism. It continues to be studied and admired for its incisive social commentary and its vivid portrayal of a young man's struggle to find his place in the world.1916. Butler spent a good many years writings this extraordinary book, and finished it a good many years ago, but in 1902, on his deathbed, gave for the first time permission to have it printed, characteristically reversing the conventional deathbed repentance and confession. He, who had abandoned all faith except his own infallibility, ardently believed in his posthumous fame, which has become a reality. This novel is a life novel, it is a biography. Three generations of the hero's family are portrayed with much detail; the plot of the story is simply chronological; the only agreeable woman in the book was a personal friend of the author. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
