THE WATERS AND THE FROGS
What happens when something familiar moves-and what was hidden beneath it suddenly appears?
THE WATERS AND THE FROGS began with an ordinary drive across the Laguna Madre before sunrise.
The water had receded.
Ground Ray Harthcock Sr. had never seen before was exposed.
Then came another picture:
FROGS.
He did not begin by deciding what the picture meant.
He began by looking.
WATER.
GROUND.
FROGS.
From that simple observation, an unexpected journey through Scripture opened.
Revelation speaks of three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of three mouths and going forth unto the kings of the earth.
Genesis gives a serpent speaking to a woman before she sees, desires, takes, and eats.
In the wilderness, the tempter himself says, It is written, yet Jesus answers:
IT IS WRITTEN AGAIN.
That response becomes one of the governing movements of this book.
CALL ANOTHER WITNESS.
Across eighty-four chapters, familiar passages are allowed to testify beside one another without being prematurely collapsed into a predetermined conclusion.
Words often passed over become important:
FROM.
UNTO.
OUT OF.
WITH.
BETWEEN.
AGAINST.
UNDER.
OF.
FOR.
The preposition relates.
The verb moves.
The pronoun identifies.
The relationship matters.
As the witnesses accumulate, the original picture widens:
WATER → GROUND → FROGS → MOUTHS → WORDS → PERSUASION → MOVEMENT → GATHERING → DESIRE → TAKING → POSSESSION → STEWARDSHIP → RELEASE → RETURN → UNTO HIM.
Along the way, difficult distinctions emerge.
Desire is not automatically sin.
Availability is not authorization.
Possession does not establish source.
Certainty is not the verdict.
Exposure does not create reality.
What is hidden has not necessarily ceased to exist.
A true word can be placed beside a movement the word itself did not authorize.
And even a sincere interpretation must remain willing to hear another witness.
THE WATERS AND THE FROGS is therefore not an invitation to accept the author's conclusions merely because they are persuasively presented.
It is an invitation to look again.
To slow down.
To distinguish what Scripture actually says from what we have learned to place beside it.
To let the witnesses testify.
And ultimately, to recognize that neither the witness, the interpreter, nor the observer occupies the throne.
The Father establishes.
The witnesses testify.
The Son interprets.
The Spirit gives life.
The journey begins when the waters move and hidden ground appears.
But the final question is not merely:
WHAT DID THE MOVEMENT REVEAL?
It is:
WHOM DOES THE MOVEMENT OBEY?
Because eventually the waters return.
The exposed ground is covered again.
The witness has spoken.
And one thing has not moved:
THE THRONE.
