This book, Water Wars: Modelling the Future of Freshwater Resources, takes its title seriously but not literally. Outright armed conflict fought specifically and solely over water remains historically rare; what is far more common, and far more consequential in aggregate, is the slow, grinding tension that water scarcity introduces into agriculture, energy production, urban growth, ecosystem health and international relations, tension that shows up in withered crops, shrinking lakes, contentious dam negotiations and cities brought to the brink of running dry. Understanding, anticipating and managing this tension is the central task of modern water resource modelling, and it is the subject of this book.
