Water Walkers: Five Journeys is the composite of five fictional picture books about a schoolgirl named Mai. Her grandmother and family members are walking the perimeter of each of the Great Lakes. In each of the stories, she learns valuable lessons about protecting the earth. The books are based on what real-time Native people accomplished under the leadership of Ojibway Grandmother Josephine Mandamin. Their water walks of over 20,000 miles throughout the United States and Canada were intended to bring collective consciousness regarding the condition of water, and to focus on environmental issues in treating water with dignity and respect. The stories are contemporary and historical at the same time. They send a strong message about the protection of water and the environment through the eyes of a young girl.
