The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells is a pioneering work of science fiction that imagines a terrifying invasion of Earth by Martians. Set in late nineteenth-century England, the novel begins when mysterious cylinders fall from the sky and crash into the English countryside. Curious onlookers gather, only to witness the emergence of alien beings equipped with advanced technology far beyond human capabilities.
The Martians unleash towering, three-legged fighting machines-tripods-armed with a devastating Heat-Ray and poisonous black smoke. Towns are destroyed, armies are swiftly defeated, and London falls into chaos as society collapses under the overwhelming assault. The narrator, an unnamed writer, struggles to survive amid the destruction, separated from his wife and forced to confront both physical danger and the psychological strain of witnessing humanity's helplessness.
Beyond its gripping narrative, the novel explores themes of imperialism, evolution, and human vulnerability. Wells reverses the logic of colonial conquest, portraying the British-then a dominant imperial power-as victims of a superior invading force. Ultimately, humanity is saved not by military strength, but by Earth's smallest organisms: bacteria to which the Martians have no immunity. The novel remains a landmark exploration of fear, survival, and the limits of human dominance.
On October 30, 1938, a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds, directed and narrated by Orson Welles, performed by the Mercury Theatre on the Air, aired on CBS. Presented as a simulated news bulletins interrupting regular programming, it dramatized a Martian invasion with startling realism. Some listeners who tuned in late believed the events were real, sparking reports of public alarm and cementing the broadcast's place in American media history.
Quote from the book -
For a time I believed that mankind had been swept out of existence, and that I stood there alone, the last man left alive.
