Walking in the New Forest gathers Begbie's rambles across the heaths, inclosures and old woods of Hampshire's royal forest. She keeps each walk under 10 miles and writes as a companion rather than a guide, noting the ponies, the trees, the tracks that peter out, the villages and the local history she picks up along the way. 'Our love for the New Forest is much greater than our knowledge of it, ' she admits in her preface, and the warmth of that admission carries the whole thing.
