In the second volume of The Waiting Room, David Berg, M.D., investigates thirty new documented cases of people who died after entering hospitals built to protect them.
A child arrives with a letter warning of possible sepsis, but the warning does not follow her into the treatment area. A man with chest pain has an abnormal ECG and an elevated cardiac marker, yet both results fail to shape the decision that sends him home. A suicidal patient asks for protection and is left without specialist care. Other patients remain stranded in waiting rooms, ambulance bays, hallways and improvised treatment areas as their conditions deteriorate.
The illnesses are different: infection, internal bleeding, heart disease, neurological catastrophe and psychiatric crisis. The institutional pattern is disturbingly familiar. Triage becomes a final decision instead of an initial assessment. Abnormal results appear without reaching the person responsible for acting on them. Overcrowding divides responsibility until every task belongs to someone-but no one owns the patient.
Drawing from coroners' findings, government investigations, court records, official reviews and family accounts, Berg reconstructs what happened while carefully distinguishing documented conclusions from allegations and unanswered questions.
The people are different. The hospitals are different. The architecture of delay remains.
