Volpone, or the Fox is a celebrated comedy by Ben Jonson, a leading figure in English Renaissance drama. First performed in 1606, the play offers a sharp satire of greed and deception in Venetian society. Volpone, a wealthy and childless man, feigns illness to manipulate those who seek to inherit his fortune. He is aided by his cunning servant, Mosca, in a scheme that exposes the avarice and moral bankruptcy of the suitors: Voltore, Corbaccio, and Corvino.
As the characters vie to win Volpone's favor through elaborate gifts and false promises, Jonson crafts a biting commentary on human nature and the corrupting influence of wealth. The play is renowned for its wit, complex characters, and dramatic irony, making it a significant work of Jacobean drama. Volpone remains a popular choice for study and performance, valued for its enduring relevance and theatrical power.
