Renato Valenzuela Taylor is a retired Air Force Colonel and former combat pilot of the Chilean Air Force (FACh). During his career, he was stationed in both northern and southern Chile, where he faced regional crises with Peru and Argentina between 1976 and 1982. This is his first publication, in which he recounts his experiences serving on the front lines of Chile's defense as a member of the FACh's combat aircrews, flying A-37B attack aircraft and F-5E interceptors.
From the relentless and demanding training, the shifting strategic and tactical scenarios, the FACh's limited operational capabilities compared to those of its potential adversaries, to the long hours on alert ready to take off and execute assigned war missions-events that took place over forty years ago-this book centers on those critical moments. Written in a direct and straightforward style, it closely follows the events of the time, offering a clear understanding of the capabilities and training of FACh combat crews. Within a well-documented historical context, it also analyzes the geopolitical variables and high-level decisions that led to these crises-and ultimately prevented a fratricidal war between neighboring nations.
A clear, honest, and passion-free narrative free from nationalist overtones, this book aims to offer new generations a firsthand account of what a group of young Chilean fighter pilots had to face in a time of historic urgency, managing to deter potential enemies and preserve peace in the South American cone.
