Creative and romantic, Violet Fanshawe, youngest daughter of John Gaspard Fanshawe of Parsloes lived through the late 19th century when her dreams were of marriage and love. She longed for love, but perhaps she also wanted to have the success of the married status, then so essential in her social circle.
As the years passed, and she had disappointments, her unhappiness was poured into writing short stories, which during the 1890's were published in lady's
magazines under her pen name, Verner Fenton.
This selection of those stories encapsulates Violet's personal dilemma, whilst they evoke thoughts of how life today is so different for ladies - and yet, show how
we have much in common with our 'sisters' of the past.
Original copies of the magazines are held in the Fanshawe Collection at Valence House Museum & Archives, Dagenham - they form part of the recent
Gordon donation...as in the fullness of time, Violet became the wife of the Hon. Huntly Douglas Gordon.
