Vietnam Through My Eyes is a powerful firsthand account of one soldier's experience in the Vietnam War, told with clarity, precision, and emotional restraint. Serving as an infantryman and later a sergeant with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division, Ralph N. Boirum documents his tour from 1967 to 1968 during some of the war's most intense and formative periods.
From arrival in-country and training at Bearcat to jungle patrols, night ambushes, bunker assaults, and major operations during the buildup to and aftermath of the Tet Offensive, the book offers a detailed look at combat as it was actually lived. Boirum explains weapons, tactics, terrain, and daily routines with a level of technical accuracy that will resonate with veterans and military historians, while remaining accessible to general readers. The narrative captures not only firefights and close calls, but also the constant physical strain, fear, boredom, and decision-making that defined life in the field.
Interwoven with combat experiences are reflections on leadership, responsibility, and the bonds formed between young soldiers facing extreme conditions together. The book does not glorify war, nor does it rely on exaggerated drama. Instead, it presents events as remembered decades later-honestly, thoughtfully, and with respect for those who served, were wounded, or did not return.
Illustrated with photographs and supported by a glossary of military terms, Vietnam Through My Eyes is an essential addition to Vietnam War literature. It is ideal for readers seeking an authentic ground-level perspective on infantry combat, the realities of service in the Mekong Delta, and the lasting impact of war on those who lived through it.
