Not illustrated.1884 Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. TEMPTATION. Lead us not into temptation. Matthew vi. 13. Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. Matthew xxvi. 41. ' We pass on now. We have seen the Balance of Truth with regard to Salvation and Preservation, let us examine it with regard to Temptation. This is highly important. Take as our text, God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it (1 Cor. x. 13). Truly, how deeply entrenched in mercy is the child of God! Tempted ones, rally bravely under this mighty banner of promise! Is it not blessed, divine, to hear of this infinite love that will not suffer me to be tempted above that I am able? Well may our cry be not only, Lead us not into temptation! but, Leave us not in temptation, and, Glorify Thyself, Lord, in our temptations. Observe briefly, six things guaranteed us here: The first most blessedly includes all, God is faithful. What rest, to turn from all earthly props, and to rest on God! Everything here is infected with faithlessness, intentional or not. How much of the world is made up of intentional faithlessness, equivocal promises; but even the best and truest friends fail consciously through human frailty, distance, or death. How glorious, then, to look up at Him, the unchanging and all-sufficing! Let this be our life motto, sounding through every day of our lives, God is faithful! But observe, He. is watching too. It were no good His being faithful, if He were not there to see; but He is never absent, but always on the spot, at the moment. He will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able.
