What makes a perfect autumn day?
For Vicky, the answer seems simple: grab her bicycle, meet up with her friends Darcy and Khajee, and spend the day searching South Hero, Vermont, for the best apple in the Champlain Islands.
But Vicky has a habit of turning almost everything into a competition, and her perfect plan quickly takes a few unexpected turns.
Along the way, the three friends stop for burgers and fries, explore apple orchards, eat cider donuts and maple creemees, search for birdhouses and dinosaurs, skip stones at White's Beach, ride past vineyards and tiny stone castles, and watch the Grand Isle Ferry cross Lake Champlain.
By the end of the day, Vicky still hasn't found one apple everyone agrees is the best. Instead, she discovers something much more important: the best adventures aren't always the ones that go according to plan, and the memories that matter most don't always fit inside a basket.
Vicky's Adventures in the Champlain Islands: The Search for the Perfect Autumn Day is a warm, funny children's story about friendship, curiosity, competition, and discovering the special places close to home.
Set in the real community of South Hero, Vermont, the book also includes a special Explore Vicky's South Hero section introducing young readers and families to several of the real places featured in Vicky's adventure.
