Via Crucis is a historical fiction novel written by F. Marion Crawford. The story is set in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero and follows the life of a young Christian woman named Fabiola. Fabiola is a member of a wealthy Roman family and is engaged to be married to a prominent senator. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she witnesses the persecution of Christians in Rome and becomes inspired to convert to Christianity herself. As Fabiola becomes more involved in the Christian community, she faces numerous challenges and obstacles, including the disapproval of her family and the threat of persecution from the Roman authorities. Along the way, she meets a number of other Christians, including the famous bishop Saint Sebastian, who helps guide her on her spiritual journey. The novel explores themes of faith, loyalty, and sacrifice, as Fabiola and her fellow Christians struggle to maintain their beliefs and survive in a hostile environment. Via Crucis is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a unique perspective on the early Christian church and the challenges faced by its members.Meanwhile the council was held in the King's tent of state, within which three hundred nobles sat at ease after the King himself had taken his place on the throne, with the Queen on his right hand. There the red-bearded Frederick of Suabia, nephew to Conrad and famous afterward as the Emperor Barbarossa, stood up and told his tale: how the wild German knights had truly forced their leaders to take the mountain road and fight the Seljuks at a disadvantage; how the Seljuks appeared and disappeared again from hour to hour, falling upon their prey at every turn, reddening every pass with blood, and leaving half-killed men among the slain to wonder whence the swift smiters had come and whither they were gone. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
