Different can be wonderful!
Cindy the Carrot has a plan for the BEST Harvest Festival ever.
Big pumpkins in front.
Red apples in a row.
Straight carrots together.
Perfect tomatoes on top.
Everything will be neat, beautiful, and exactly as Cindy imagined.
Then Ben arrives with another basket.
A tiny tomato. A curly cucumber. A bumpy potato. And even a carrot with two legs!
They certainly do not fit Cindy's perfect plan. At first, she thinks the funny-looking vegetables should stay out of the display. But her friends begin to wonder: does looking different really mean something isn't good?
The friends taste, chop, cook, and create. A spotted apple is crisp and delicious. A curly carrot is wonderfully sweet. A twisty cucumber becomes stars, ribbons, and silly vegetable faces. Soon the vegetables Cindy almost left behind are bringing colour, laughter, and something special to the Harvest Festival. And Cindy starts asking a new question:
Perfect for what?
Veggie Square: Cindy's Perfect Harvest is a warm and playful social-emotional learning (SEL) picture book that helps young children explore differences, appearances, flexibility, inclusion, and the importance of looking beyond first impressions.
This story is perfect for:
- Preschool and kindergarten children
- Children ages 3-7
- SEL lessons and classroom read-alouds
- Discussions about differences and inclusion
- Children learning not to judge something only by how it looks
- Conversations about changing plans and being flexible
- Families, teachers, and homeschool settings
Includes grown-up discussion prompts and a Talk & Try Together section with a fun Funny Veggie Creation activity that encourages children to celebrate different shapes, sizes, colours, and ideas.
A cheerful reminder that different does not mean wrong-and that sometimes the things that do not match can make something even more wonderful.
