Volume II: God's Testimonies

This second book in the series Why Is Life So Hard? explores the wisdom and beauty of God's testimonies. Psalm 119, an impressive poem, presents the benefits of what God has made known about life, about his world. To write it, the psalmist used different words to capture truth. The root of testimonies refers both to the one testifying and to the evidence conveyed, or even to their recorder. Perhaps for this reason, the word is always plural, and always relates to evidence for the divine as trustworthy laws. Think gravity. Such testimonies are not like eyewitness accounts, which might vary with perspective. Rather ancient Biblical characters created a memorial whenever the Lord did something significant. They erected pillars and altars, etched covenants, planted trees, all as a witness to those who would come behind. That's the word here. God also crafts such a witness to his deeds. Far broader than the legislative code, God's testimonies refer to particular phenomena that inevitably occur when certain conditions are present. Perpetual reminders of invisible truth, God builds them in the difficulties we face.
