Understanding a building like an Architect is a guide to learning how to look at architecture with discernment. Have you ever wondered why a building is the way it is? When an architect observes a structure, they don't simply see a facade or a place to be; they see a way of being. Behind every wall, window, and material lies a chain of decisions, challenges, and compromises that explain the physical reality that surrounds us. In this book, Javier Alonso Madrid, an architect with over 25 years of international experience, invites you on an intellectual journey to discover what is usually hidden from plain sight. This is not a technical manual, but rather a friendly and insightful guide to rediscovering the pleasure of observation. What you will discover in this book:
The keys to a professional perspective: You will learn to analyze a building through its five fundamental concepts: site, use, form, structure, and time.
The building as a system: You will discover how light, materials, the environment, and circulation intertwine to create unique spatial experiences. Real-world references and critical analysis: A journey through historical cases, innovative works, and current examples of buildings from around the world.
Common successes and mistakes: You will learn to avoid bias and appreciate the importance of details, understanding that even problematic buildings offer valuable lessons.
The future of architecture: A reflection on how technology, sustainability, and new management models are transforming the way we inhabit the world. Who is this book for?
