What is faith? Can it be valuable, virtuous, or rational and, if so, when and why?

Understanding Faith: Historical and Contemporary Readings brings together a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary collection of texts exploring the nature, value, psychology, and rationality of faith. From the ancient world to the present day, it reveals the variety of answers that thinkers and traditions have offered to these questions.

Ranging from sacred narratives, prayers, creeds, and classic texts to a philosophical short story, original contributions, psychological research, and contemporary scholarship, the volume offers an unusually rich set of resources for understanding faith in both religious and secular life. It also explores whether faith requires belief, how faith relates to doubt and spiritual struggle, and when faith may be misplaced, irrational, or vicious.

The volume is organized into four thematic parts, supported by editorial introductions and suggestions for further reading. Part 1 examines faith in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, exploring the varied meanings of 'emunah, pístis, fides, iman, and sraddha and their relations to faith, trust, belief, faithfulness, commitment, devotion, and practice. Part 2 traces influential perspectives from early and medieval Christianity through the Reformation and Enlightenment into the nineteenth century, with selections from Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Hobbes, Locke, Wesley, Mendelssohn, Kant, and Kierkegaard alongside influential confessions and catechisms. Part 3 turns to faith as a lived human phenomenon, examining exemplars of faith, doubt and spiritual struggle, and psychological perspectives on faith and trust in God. Part 4 collects substantial contemporary philosophical reflections on the nature of faith, its value and virtue, and its rationality and practice from secular, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic perspectives.

Together, these readings help define the emerging interdisciplinary field of pistology, the study of faith, faithfulness, and closely related phenomena.
