From award-winning and bestselling author Elizabeth Chadwick comes an epic love story set against the backdrop of high chivalry, deadly war, devastating plague, and fierce rivalry in the 14th century: the first of two parts that tells the extraordinary tale of a woman who rose from royal rebel to become a queen without a crown.
1338. England has declared war on France, and Jeanette of Kent, cousin to King Edward III, bids farewell to her family as she joins the royal court across the sea.
In Antwerp, amidst palace intrigues and the duties of her rank, she meets the brave knight Thomas Holland, with whom she falls deeply in love. Though they both know their love is forbidden, their passion is so strong that they secretly marry. But before they can reveal their union, Thomas is sent to war, and in his absence Jeanette is forced into a second marriage, becoming a key piece in a power struggle where others seek to control her fate. When Thomas returns, the true battle begins. With nearly her entire family against them, the defiant lovers will risk everything to be together, no matter the cost.
