Eletään vuotta 1684. Ruotsin suurvallan sotilaiden otto rasittaa rahvasta. Iiläistä nuorukaista uhkaan sotilaaksi joutuminen. Kalareissulla Simojärven asumattomiin erämaihin Matti kuulee Kemijoen olevan vain päivämatkan päässä. Impiönjärven kalasaunalla nuorukainen tekee päätöksen lähtemisestä kohti Kemijokea ja Kemijärveä, joista hänelle on syntynyt houkuttava mielikuva. UHKA on seikkailukertomus erämaassa ja pakolaiskertomus ihmisten parissa. Kirjan tausta-aineistona on maakunta- ja paikallishistoria.
