Each of us carries an invisible set of baggage. For some, there's a hidey-hole for the one that got away-and took our heart forever. Another's compartments may consist of multiple chronic illnesses. Yet another's could carry loads and loads that burden others around them: anger, resentment, regret, to name just a few.

In light of this human experience that transcends time and culture, hardships are impossible to avoid. But what about those of us who can't get back up after that proverbial fall from grace, perpetual disappointment, or a life of indignity? Is the world against them? Do they belong with everyone else? The characters within these pages wonder.

Shoji Kaburagi shares nine short stories that ask: are some humans not cut out for this world because they're simply unwanted? It is a staggering notion to consider, and the interpretation of the question will vary. One thing is for sure, the stories in this collection will both entertain you and leave you contemplating Kaburagi's premise.
