PREFACE Have you ever felt like your world was falling apart? Do you sometimes wonder if things will ever get better, or if your parents' disagreements will ever stop? Have you ever cried yourself to sleep, wondering why things are so hard? Do you wish that someone would understand your pain and tell you it will be okay? Have you ever been scared because of the fighting around you, not knowing what tomorrow will look like? Do you feel like no one knows how tough it is to be you? Have you ever wished that your family was like everyone else's, that there were no secrets or fights? STANISLAUS WAFULA THE UNSTOPPABLE ME AT NINE 6 Do you ever wonder if you're strong enough to face all the struggles life throws at you? Are you afraid that you'll never feel whole again? Do you sometimes feel alone, even when you're surrounded by people? If you said yes to any of these questions, this book is for you. This story is written by me, Stanislaus Wafula, a nine-year-old boy who has faced challenges most kids don't even think about. It's a story about a life that wasn't perfect, a story about a boy whose world felt broken when his parents fought and eventually separated. It's a story of pain, but more importantly, it's a story of resilience, of learning how to survive, grow, and become stronger. It's a story for every child who has ever felt lost, who has ever cried in the dark, STANISLAUS WAFULA THE UNSTOPPABLE ME AT NINE 7 who has faced the uncertainty of living in a home where the fights never seem to end. When my parents fought, it felt like the world was crashing down around me. I was only three when I started school, but I had to leave my mother to go to school. I was just a little boy, and school was scary at first. I wanted to be with her, but she had to work at night. I didn't see my father much either, because he worked during the day. But life kept pushing me forward. The fights between my parents seemed to get worse. Sometimes it was so bad that I had to be the one to comfort my little sister, who couldn't even speak yet. I wasn't even old enough to understand everything, but I could feel the tension. Sometimes I would hear them argue, and I would feel so helpless, so small. But somehow, even through all that pain, I learned. I learned that there are things STANISLAUS WAFULA THE UNSTOPPABLE ME AT NINE 8 you can't control in life, but you can control how you react to them. That's why I want to share my story with you. I want you to know that no matter what you are going through, there is always hope. You are stronger than you know. You are braver than you think. Even if life feels hard right now, that doesn't mean it will always be this way. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. In this book, you will walk with me through my life as a young boy facing difficulties at home, as my parents fought, as I watched my mother leave, and as I tried to make sense of all the changes. I want you to know that even though it wasn't easy, I survived. And so can you. You can face your challenges and come out stronger on the other side. STANISLAUS WAFULA THE UNSTOPPABLE ME AT NINE 9 I know that sometimes it feels like the fighting will never end. I know that sometimes you wonder if things will ever go back to normal. But let me tell you this: The end is not really the end. That's what I have learned. What feels like the end, the pain, the sadness, and the heartbreak-it's just the beginning of something greater. And even though your parents might not be together, that doesn't mean your life is over. In the pages of this book, you will see how I turned my pain into power. How I learned to stand up for myself, to help my sister, to be brave even when I didn't feel like it. You'll see how I learned new things like how to do chores around the house, how to plan my day, how to take care of myself, and how to be strong for the people.
