The incident left many injured and one dead, sleeping car attendent Michael Bates. Police later determined that sabotage was the cause of the train derailment, and that someone had taken more than twenty spikes in order to cause the train to crash. The investigation into the crime found parallels to a 1939 derailment in Nevada. Eventually, a group calling themselves The Sons of the Gestapo took credit for the crime.
