The University Musical Encyclopedia: The Opera History and Guide is a comprehensive book written by Lillian Nordica, originally published in 1912. The book is a guide to the history of opera, providing readers with a detailed overview of the development of opera from its origins in Italy to its spread throughout Europe and beyond. The book is divided into several sections, with each section focusing on a different aspect of opera history. The first section covers the origins of opera in Italy and the development of the art form during the Baroque period. The second section covers the rise of opera in other European countries, including France, Germany, and England. The third section of the book is a guide to the major composers of opera, including Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and others. This section provides readers with biographical information about each composer, as well as an overview of their major works. The fourth section of the book is a guide to the major operas themselves, providing readers with a synopsis of each opera's plot and information about its music and production history. Throughout the book, Nordica provides readers with insights into the cultural and historical context of opera, as well as its place in the broader musical landscape. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in opera history, from students and scholars to casual fans of the art form. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
