The Union Harmony, or Universal Collection of Sacred Music, originally published in 1796, represents a significant contribution to the landscape of early American sacred music. Compiled by Oliver Holden, a notable composer and compiler of his time, this volume offers a diverse selection of hymns and anthems intended for use in religious services and gatherings. The collection provides valuable insight into the musical tastes and practices of the late 18th century, showcasing the evolving traditions of sacred music in the United States.
This volume preserves the melodies and harmonies that resonated with congregations of the era, offering a glimpse into their spiritual and cultural lives. The Union Harmony stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to inspire faith and community.
