For two centuries, American women have inherited an unfinished republic. The Founders excluded them, the 19th Amendment opened the franchise, the 1965 Voting Rights Act extended it in practice, the rights era of the 1960s and 70s built the constitutional architecture of equality - and then the architecture began to crack. Dobbs reversed a half-century-old right. Shelby County gutted the Voting Rights Act. The public sphere became hostile to women's political speech. Representation grew but did not translate into durable institutional protection.
