Unaware of rain by Yiqiao Wang is a philosophical novel tracing the intellectual and spiritual journey of Nolan, a young student of Chinese-British heritage, under the mentorship of Artur Gąsiorowski, an aging Polish-Jewish philosophy professor in Warsaw.
Through their Socratic dialogues, the novel explores the tension between knowledge and wisdom, language and silence, presence and absence. Artur teaches Nolan that philosophy begins not with answers, but with wonder-and that true wisdom lies in knowing the limits of knowing. The narrative unfolds across four volumes, moving from Nolan's initial encounter with philosophy to his professor's decline and death. Along the way, themes of home, exile, memory, and mortality are woven through intimate scenes: shared meals, moments of wordless companionship, and the quiet witnessing of a body's slow unmaking.
Drawing on Western and Eastern traditions-from Plato and Kant to Zhuangzi and Buddhist thought-the book ultimately proposes that philosophy is less about constructing systems and more about learning how to be present. It is a meditation on inheritance, grief, and the kind of knowing that survives beyond words: the kind passed not through doctrine, but through the fragile, indelible traces one person leaves in another.
