PROGRAM NOTES: I certainly should think that I was mad, absolutely mad, if I were not conscious that I knew my state, if I could not fathom it and analyze it with the most complete lucidity. I should, in fact, be a reasonable man laboring under a hallucination.
As I tried to imagine a musical context able to support a (reduced) version of Maupassant's text, it is the sensibility of the narrator toward his existence that I wished to represent foremost. The first sung sentence Is it a cold shiver that has darkened my soul? while not at the beginning of the original text, has been chosen as starting point for that reason. The musical work proceeds onward from lucidity until toxic madness through different intermediary states that correspond to the sections of the text [melancholia, hyper-cerebral activity, paranoia, schizophrenia].As for the voice, each section brings forth a different type of relationship between the mezzo-soprano and the electronic setup. By itself the electronics represent the internal psychological world of the narrator.
