Turning thirteen is a strange mix of exciting, confusing, awkward, and surprisingly serious. You are old enough to want more freedom, make more of your own choices, and have stronger opinions about almost everything. At the same time, people suddenly expect you to remember things, handle responsibilities, manage school, deal with friendships, and make smart decisions without always explaining how.
This book is about the everyday stuff that comes with becoming a teenager. Some of it is practical, like managing homework, using your phone safely, handling money, doing laundry, cooking simple meals, and getting places without panicking. Some of it is personal, like dealing with changing friendships, big emotions, confidence, peer pressure, and figuring out when to ask for help.
Every chapter also ends with a Try This section. Those are not homework and nobody is grading them. Each one is a single small thing you can go do this week, because reading about a skill and actually having one are not the same, and the gap between them closes by doing, not by agreeing.
You are not supposed to have everything figured out at thirteen. Nobody does, and growing up is mostly learning one small skill at a time, making mistakes, fixing them, and getting a little better at handling things on your own. The goal of this book is simple: to give you useful information for the situations that start showing up more often during your first years as a teenager.
