They meet at the Millstone Café on a Tuesday in November. He is a structural engineer, fourteen months widowed, who drove over thinking he wanted one thing and arrived uncertain of what that thing was. She tells him the truth about why she is there. He listens the way structures bear weight - quietly, without apparent effort, holding more than you'd think. She tells him things she hasn't told anyone. He begins drawing again - house plans he had put away when his wife got sick - and he does it on fresh paper.
When she finally sees the plans she finds a slip of paper tucked inside them. Her name at the top. Five things she had said she liked, written in his small precise hand.
I didn't mean for you to see that, he says.
